Pre-Authorizing a Prescription With No Refills

To pre-authorize a prescription:

  1. Create a refill for a prescription that does not have any remaining authorized refills. You can create a refill from a patient's profile or by entering the Rx #.
  2. Note: When you open the prescription in Rx Detail, an alert is added stating that the prescription is unauthorized and the doctor must be contacted.

  3. In the Prescription section, specify the QA field with the quantity to be authorized by the doctor.
  4. Press the TAB key on your keyboard.
  5. Select the Pre-Authorized checkbox.
  6. Select the Fill button.
  7. Result: The prescription is placed on the Pending tab with a status of Pending, an Auth of PRE, and the PreAuth checkbox on the Workbench is selected for the prescription. The prescription labels and counselling leaflet are printed, and a claim is sent to the patient's third parties if necessary.

Completing a Pre-Authorized Prescription

Once you receive authorization from the doctor, you can proceed to completing the pre-authorized prescription.

When the QA is the same as the pre-authroized amount:

  1. From the Workbench, select the Pending tab.
  2. Locate the prescription.
  3. Select the PreAuth checkbox.
  4. Result: The prescription moves to the Completed tab. No label set prints.

When the QA is different than the pre-authroized amount:

  1. From the Workbench, select the Pending tab.
  2. Locate the prescription.
  3. Select the Detail button. The prescription opens in Rx Detail.
  4. In the QA field, specify the new authorized amount.
  5. Press the Tab key on your keyboard.
  6. Deselect the Pre-Authorized checkbox.
  7. Select the Save button.
  8. Result: The prescription moves to the Completed tab. No label set prints.
