Using a Minimum Dispensing Quantity

The Minimum Dispensing Quantity field is located in the Drug folder Inventory tab. This ensures products priced per unit will be dispensed in multiples of the minimum dispensing quantity. The Minimum Dispensing Quantity is pack size specific and is a feature that can be used by both inventory and non-inventory pharmacies.

The Min Disp Quantity is a safety feature that ensures appropriate quantities are dispensed in Rx Detail. This helps avoid quantity errors when dispensing. For example, a 15ML bottle of eye drops priced by the unit would have a minimum dispensing quantity of 15, since it can only be dispensed in multiples of 15.

To set the minimum dispensing quantity for a pack size, do the following:

  1. Open the Drug Folder.
  2. Press the Inventory tab.
  3. In the Packs Available section, highlight the pack size and scroll to the right until the Min Disp Quantity column is displayed.
  4. Enter the minimum dispensing quantity in the Min Disp Quantity field for the highlighted pack size.
  5. If required, repeat steps 3-4 for any additional pack sizes for this drug.
  6. Press the Save or OK button (the available button differs depending on how you opened the Drug folder).

Filling a prescription for a product with a minimum dispensing quantity

When a prescription is filled for a product that has a minimum dispensing quantity, validation checking will occur in Rx Detail to ensure the quantity used in the prescription is a multiple of the minimum dispensing quantity. The validation checking occurs when the user presses Fill, Queue or Multi-Fill.

Example: A prescription is created for a 15ML bottle of BETAGAN 0.5% DROPS. The user enters 1 in the Rx Detail Qty field, thinking that 1 bottle is being dispensed. The following prompt appears when the user presses the Fill action button:

The prompt indicates BETAGAN should be filled as multiples of 15, since pack size 15 has a minimum dispensing quantity of 15. Select OK to return to Rx Detail and modify the quantity authorized (QA) and the quantity (Qty).

The user updates the QA field to reflect multiples of 15 and changes the Qty field to 15. The prescription can then be filled successfully. One 15ML bottle will be provided to the patient.
