Introduction to Drug Updates

PharmaClik Rx downloads drug file updates and applies them to the PharmaClik Rx drug file at each pharmacy. The drug file updates contain the following information:

  • Updated information for existing drugs
  • Price updates for existing drugs
  • New drugs

Counseling leaflets and the interaction-checking module within PharmaClik Rx are kept up-to-date through Clinical File Updates, which are also downloaded through PharmaClik Rx.

Pricing Summary

There are three types of prices for a drug:

Eligibility Price (ELI)

  • Set in the Prov $ field in the main tab of the Drug Folder.
  • Based on the published price in the provincial formulary.
  • Updated by PharmaClik Rx when a new formulary becomes effective.

Supplier Price (SUP)

  • Set in the Price fields in the Drug folder Inventory tab for the selected pack size.
  • Updated by PharmaClik Rx when the supplier provides new prices. This is only applicable to suppliers that are integrated with PharmaClik Rx (i.e., McKesson, K&F).
  • PharmaClik Rx’s updates can be blocked at store level.

Acquisition Cost (ACQ)

  • Set in the Acq Cost fields in the Drug folder Inventory tab for the selected pack size.
  • NOT updated by PharmaClik Rx; must be maintained at store level.
  • Best method of maintaining accurate acquisition costs is to monitor inventory on PharmaClik Rx.
  • This ensures acquisition costs are updated with the most recent price each time a purchase order is reconciled.

Downloading Updates

Drug file updates are downloaded to pharmacies on a nightly basis and are automatically applied to the drug file. New drugs are added to the drug file automatically. Updated general information for existing drugs is automatically applied to drugs where the Save Flag in the main tab of the Drug Folder is turned OFF.

Price updates for existing drugs are automatically applied to drugs where the Block $ Updates flag is turned OFF, or if the overall Block PharmaClik Rx’s Supplier Update flag is OFF.

To protect prices or information that you have customized (e.g. changes to drug name or strength), the Block $ Updates flag and/or Save Flag can be turned ON to prevent updates from automatically being applied to the drug. Updates will appear in the Review Overrides window where they can be reviewed and you can choose whether or not to apply them. BLOCKED UPDATES SHOULD BE REVIEWED ON A DAILY BASIS.

In Ontario, stores can choose to put a general block on all McKesson price updates, by setting a flag in the Supplier folder.

The drug updates functionality provides maximum benefits:

  • General drug file updates are automatically applied without requiring manual intervention.
  • Updates to drugs protected by the Save Flag and Block $ Updates flag are not omitted, as you have the ability to review the suggested updates.

Note: The Last PharmaClik Rx date in the main tab of the Drug folder displays the last time the drug’s general information was updated (e.g. Trade Name, Strength, etc...). PharmaClik Rx does not provide a date for the last time the McKesson price was updated by PharmaClik Rx.

Warning If drug updates (i.e., general information, supplier price, acquisition cost) are blocked, your store is responsible for keeping the drug information up to date.
