(Ontario) Filling a Methadone Prescription With Carries
When a patient is authorized for have carries, the prescription is filled in a slightly different manner than a regular narcotic prescription. As with a Methadone prescription that does not have carries, the quantity being dispensed in the prescription will reflect the number of milligrams of Methadone.
For Example: A prescription is written for Methadone 45mg with 2 repeats. The QA for the prescription will be 135 and the Qty will be 45. Two carries will be requested when the prescription is filled.
To fill a methadone prescription with carries:
- Create a new or refill prescription using the Methadone dynamic quantity mixture (eg. Methadone 10mg/mL Solution in Tang).
- If this is a new prescription, enter the appropriate quantity authorized in the QA field.
- In the Qty field, enter the number of mg of Methadone that will be provided with each dose.
- Enter the remaining prescription information (SIG, days supply, V/W, etc...).
- Press the Rx > Methadone. The 'Methadone' window opens.
- Enter the number of carries in the Carries field.
- The Ingestion Date calendar defaults to the current date and the appropriate number of consecutive days depending on the number of carries; there should be one day highlighted for each Methadone prescription. If these are the correct ingestion dates, skip to step 9. If you need to modify the ingestion dates, press the Clear Days button.
- On the Ingestion Date calendar, highlight the dates that the patient will ingest the Methadone.
- Press the OK button.
- If you didn't set the V/W Narcotic flag in step 4 above, a prompt will ask if the prescription is verbal or written. Press Yes for Written. Press No for Verbal.
- The prescriptions will be processed in the Queue and assigned consecutive narcotic prescription numbers.
- If a prescription has a Status of Complete, you can print the prescription labels to move the prescription to the Completed tab.
- If a prescription has a Status of Incomplete, you can choose to waive some or all of the outstanding costs.
Note: For Ontario Drug Benefit claims, PharmaClik Rx enters an intervention code (UA) on each claim except the first claim. This ensures Drug Benefit will accept multiple claims for the same drug on the same day. When the claims return from the third party, you can check the results of the claim submittal.
